Executive function is a set of brain skills that help us manage time, remember instructions, plan ahead, shift gears, and regulate emotions. From packing a backpack to finishing a group project or recognizing when you need a break. It’s the behind-the-scenes system that helps kids succeed. These skills grow over time, and they’re as important in kindergarten as they are in high school.
That’s developmentally typical. Executive function skills don’t grow in a straight line, they surge during transitions like third grade, middle school, and adolescence. One day your child may seem independent and focused, the next they forget their lunch and meltdown over homework. It’s not defiance, it’s a brain under construction.
Think of yourself as a scaffold, not a savior. Start with collaborative supports like visual checklists or shared routines, then gradually hand over responsibility as your child becomes more aware and capable. Building skills slowly and intentionally sets the stage for confident independence later on.
Metacognition is “thinking about thinking." It’s your child noticing what helps them focus, when they’re overwhelmed, and how they learn best. Instead of just using a strategy because we told them to, they begin choosing it themselves. When kids understand their own brains, they become more confident, self-aware, and able to advocate for what they need.
It’s always okay to ask for help if executive function struggles are affecting daily life, especially if things aren’t improving after consistent support. Red flags include intense meltdowns, total avoidance of tasks, ongoing disorganization that doesn't match their age, or regression after progress. An OT, psychologist, or learning specialist can help guide next steps with compassion and clarity.
